Art for the Isolated

"Art for the Isolated" was started by Joshua David Watson and Juliet San Nicolas de Bradley. The project is an effort to place photography and poetry with patients in hospitals via postcards.

Each postcard contains a photograph on one side and a poem on the other, with options in both Spanish and English. Partner hospitals are given catalogs that provide patients with a choice of postcards and guiding questions that promote visual and poetic engagement.

My photograph above was paired with Christopher Bakken’s poem, “Invocation,” in the first batch of postcards, which shipped out recently.

The list of participating photographers and writers is expansive and includes many of my colleagues and former teachers from the Hartford Art School community: Alec Soth, Bryan Schutmaat, Alice Rose George, Mary Frey, Robert Lyons, Matt Eich, Matthew Genitempo, Doug Dubois, Andrew Fedynak, Joshua David Watson, Aaron Hardin, Zach Callahan, Virginia Wilcox, Rachel Cavaiuolo, Seth Johnson, Dagmar Kolatschny, Tamara Reynolds, and Garrett Grove.
